Facebook Engagement Secrets You Wish You Knew One Year Ago

We’ve all seen at least ONE of those pages on Facebook. You know, the one with thousands of fans, but little to no likes or hardly anyone commenting on their content? Yep, those pages! Such realities on Facebook have made the use of engagement more and more important as one of the best metrics for measuring the success of a page. The following 7 tips, if implemented on a consistent basis, will ensure an increase in your Facebook engagement. Let’s get started.

1. Take Advantage of Facebook Insights

If you are like most of my clients, an engaged audience is highly important to you. After all, your Facebook page was set up as a way to bring traffic to your website in hopes of converting those viewers into customers or avid readers.

Facebook Insights lets you analyze your previous content, enabling you to see what has been working and what hasn’t. It lets you know when your fans are online, which of your posts generate the most engagement, advanced filters, and much more. With this information, you are constantly able to refine your social media strategy based on previous results.

2. Be Mindful Of When Your Fans Are Online

One of the benefits of Facebook Insights, as stated above, is the ability to see when your fans are online. Use this information to post more of the content that your fans respond well to during your peak hours. Also, take advantage of Facebook’s scheduling feature to schedule an update to post in the future for when you are not able to. This feature is also helpful for keeping your page updated on the weekends as and what may be off hours for you but no necessarily for our fans.

3. Are You Ready For This?…Engage Your Fans!

Join in on the conversation. Generally speaking, your likes, shares and comments take place within the first few hours of posting, so stick around to answer questions your fans may have. Or better yet, stick around to encourage engagement if necessary.

4. Do Not Make It All About You

In the world of social media, there is a thin line between too much self-promotion and being seen as self-centered or out of touch with the rest of the world. Fans will tune you out quick if all you talk about is you, you, and you. While social media is about promoting one’s brand, it is very important that you also appear helpful as well.

Get creative and have fun with it. Strive to create a great balance of content that is important to you and shares from other sources. The goal is to sell and promote your brand without coming off like a self-centered, all-about-me, used car salesman.

6. Ask Your Fans Questions

This makes your fans feel like their opinions matter, and the more they feel like what they have to say matters to you and your fans, the more likely they are to respond to your questions. Find creative ways to ask questions that will encourage them to share their thoughts with you.

7. Say It With Emoticons

If you are not using emoticons in your posts, today is the day to start. They are fun ways of conveying emotions visually and because the use of emoticons is a very popular online trend, using them in your post humanizes your brand.  If used appropriately, studies have shown them to increase fan engagement by at least 52%, giving your post a 57% higher like rate and a 33% higher share and comment rate. Imagine: a few keystrokes and you’re done!

BONUS

As the world becomes more and more social media driven, I always remember the words of Jay Baer, President of ConvinceAndConvert.com. He said,“People are on the Internet for one of two reasons…either to solve a problem or to be entertained.”Before posting, it is very important to think  about the likelihood of your fans liking and possibly sharing your content. Would they feel comfortable sharing your post with their friends? Will they feel entertained or informed by your post? Make it a constant goal to tap into the psyche of your fans to find out what they care about and come up with creative ways to cater to them while staying true to your brand.
